Junior Graphic Designer

Location: Chelsea, London.  

Salary: £26,000.00-£28,000.00 per annum DOE.  

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time.  

Hours: Monday to Friday, 10.00-18.00.  

Line Manager: Head of Cataloguing  

Task/Project Manager: Graphic Designer

One of the leading rare book dealers in the world and the largest antiquarian book dealer in Europe, Peter Harrington has, for over half a century, dealt with a stock of thousands of fine books, from rare seventeenth-century Shakespeare folios to highly sought-after contemporary classics such as signed and inscribed first editions of the Harry Potter series. We have a team of over 60 staff across 3 sites with expertise covering wide areas of antiquarian bookselling as well as a gallery and bindery. We exhibit regularly at several international book and antique fairs and look to continue our growth as one of the leaders in our field.  

As we continue to grow, both domestically and internationally, we are seeking a motivated and creative Junior Graphic Designer to join our team and support our print and digital design work.  

Role overview  

As a Junior Graphic Designer, you will work closely with our in-house design team to create engaging, visually appealing content. This role focuses on producing editorial layouts for our print catalogues as well as digital assets for marketing campaigns. This is an excellent opportunity for a designer with a passion for typography, layout, and digital media. You’ll work on everything from producing layouts for our print catalogues to creating eye-catching digital assets for marketing campaigns.

  

Responsibilities  

  • Assist in developing and refining editorial layouts for our print catalogues using InDesign
  • Organise and manage design files, ensuring efficient file storage and workflow
  • Editing product and editorial photography with Photoshop
  • Support eCommerce graphic needs as required by the Marketing Department, creating engaging visuals for our social channels, newsletters, and ad campaigns
  • Contribute creatively to concepts for ongoing and new print and digital campaigns

Essential skills and experience  

  • BA in Graphic Design (or equivalent)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop
  • Proven ability to work to high standards under tight deadlines for both print and digital outputs
  • Strong sense of typography and layout with attention to detail
  • A love for traditional print design, combined with a modern digital mindset
  • Great communication and teamwork skills

Desirable, but not essential  

  • Experience with Illustrator, After Effects, or Premiere Pro
  • Experience using a DSLR camera
  • Demonstrable typographic or print interests

What does the hiring process look like?  

Applicants can expect the following:  

  • Application review: we aim to respond to all applicants within two weeks.
  • Phone screen: a short conversation with our Head of Cataloguing (10 to 15 minutes).
  • First meeting: ideally in person, or via Teams, with our Head of Cataloguing and our Graphic Designer (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour).
  • Task: shortlisted candidates for the second meeting will be given a short InDesign task of around 1 hour (we will supply copy and assets).
  • Second meeting: in person, for the finalists to meet our Editor-in-Chief and Senior Graphic Designer. We will also give you feedback on your assessment at this stage.
  • Offer stage: our HR department will be in touch within 3 days of your final meeting, with our offer to you.
