Design Assistant, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Summary

Little Brown Books for Young Readers is seeking to hire a Design Assistant. This person will provide vital administrative and design support to the VP, Creative Director, and Design Department as a whole.

This is a NYC based role. Please note, our current hybrid model is two days per week in the office. Effective January 2025, HBG's hybrid model will be 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct administrative and design support to the Creative Director through clerical tasks, such as processing invoices, preparing and archiving contracts, maintaining Microsoft Outlook calendar and emails, expense reports, as well as assist in the design and production of jackets, covers, and interiors. Also provide general design and administrative support to the greater department and other art directors as needed.
  • Work closely with illustrators and photographers in the creation of cover and interior artwork, and oversee out-of-house freelance designers as necessary.
  • Be the liaison to other departments such as Sales, Marketing, Editorial, Publicity, Legal, Accounts Payable, and provide materials as needed.
  • Coordinate weekly Jacket Meetings and record meeting minutes. Distribute minutes to Design, Production, Editorial, and Marketing. Also attend weekly Production meetings.
  • Make sure all cover assets are archived into Aprimo (Digital Asset Management System) on a timely basis for Sales and Marketing. Enter milestone data and monitor compliance on an ongoing basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Creative Director.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • B.A. in Graphic Design or related field preferred.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings regardless of audience.
  • Must be results-driven, and take appropriate steps to achieve goals while taking ownership of situations as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail.
  • Operates ethically: admits mistakes, treats others with respect, trust, and dignity, demonstrates honest and ethical behavior, and follows through on commitments and agreements.
  • Be comfortable with both administrative duties as well as more creative design-related tasks.
  • Must be proficient in the Macintosh operating system — knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office required.

Compensation

The compensation for this position is $47,500. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
